During the holidays I spent much time searching the internet for sugar-free baking recipes. The result? Much to my dismay it was a lot of Splenda-infused, Stevia-spiked cookies and quick breads.

I've learned from making roasted apple sauces, that fruit has plenty of its own natural sugar to lend sweetness to desserts. But from my Google-ing, I also discovered that "sugar-free" in America generally means without processed white sugar.

Once I started browsing through vegan and gluten-free recipes, I found a few more truly sugarless recipes. I ended up experimenting with Morsels Minus' Banana Bread. I made a few substitutions and left out the dates, but this still turned out unbelievably delicious: moist, sweet and a guilt-free morning treat. (This bread doesn't contain - or even need - butter!)

So, I'm now embarking on a true quest, for your best genuinely sugar-free dessert recipes. I will bake them up and taste test them with the kids at my husband's karate school in Pleasant Valley. The winners will be highlighted on the network.

Hi Megan, good luck on your quest! Gluten-free, egg-free, vegetarian/vegan recipes abound but white or refined sugar-less goodies seem to be the final frontier. I have a couple recipes I'm developing and will share them here when ready [Grated Apple Tart, Choc. Chip Banana Brownies...]. "175 Natural Sugar Desserts" is a cookbook I use a lot: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Natural-Sugar-Desserts/381754149464. The Date and Oat/Fig muffins are amazing!
