June 8, 2011 from 6pm to 7pm
Here's a chance to help your NYC friends better understand the deep pleasures Hudson Valley agriculture can provide (or attend yourself if you spend the mid-week in "the city"). The workshop is about"culinary mindfulness." Those who attend will learn strategies to help food choices bring more fun, more laughter, more gratification, and possibly even more…See More

I asked my friend Bryan Mayer, who apprenticed at Fleisher's. He recommended pan-searing slices as you would foie gras or roasting whole. I found this recipe, which looks tasty and not "brown-sauce goopy"…

Hey Joyce (btw, loved the Ricotta we got from you at Winter Sun!). I found a bunch of kidney pie plus steak and kidney pie recipes. I got them from "the google" so they should be good, but they all sound kind of brown-sauce goopy. I'm…

What to do with lamb kidney?

We've got a portioned half-lamb from Awesome Farms in the freezer. Our share included a lamb kidney. So, let me ask: Any ideas/recipes/suggestion for what to do with lamb kidney?

Thanks Cheryl, for both the kind words about the local food articles and for posting on Facebook. The more we can let the world know about Hudson Valley bounty the better it'll be for everyone. I really enjoyed that in addition to interviewing…

Thanks Joyce, glad you took a look. The "system" really is set up to make it harder rather than easier to eat the food we can actually see growing ... and Meghan, you raise an interesting issue. My sense is that NYC makes it a bit easier…

Great articles and many good points made. It is amazing that folks drive by food sources daily but don't know quite how to connect. Connection really is the bottom line...

Thanks Todd. I look forward to reading! One thing that fascinates me about the Hudson Valley is that the NYC set has an easier time getting our local food than we do! That's one of the reason's I started HVFN.

FYI, something about the problem of getting local foods to local tables at True/Slant.

I just posted a series of articles on True/Slant about problems sourcing local foods. Many of our favorite Hudson Valley farmers are mentioned, and there is an extensive interview with Stephanie Turco of Veritas Farms. I hope you all will take a look, tell your friends, and maybe (I hope!) leave some comments.

Here's a link to a piece I wrote for True/Slant about the politics of meat, food choices, and our disturbed food system -- plus I got to mention BOTH Veritas Farm and Pete Taliaferro ... http://trueslant.com/toddessig/2009/11/29/vote-with-your-plate-on-the-politics-of-meat/

Just found out about HVFN, looks interesting! In addition to cooking and eating I also write a little about food. I used to have some pieces in The Valley Table but have moved online. My latest column at True/Slant celebrates both Michelle Obama and Tuscan Kale -- if interested its at trueslant.com/toddessig/2009/09/19/michelle-buys-kale-from-a-farmer-totally-awesome/
