Basbousa - Semolina Cake soaked with a Lemon Rosewater Syrup

Not only is another year upon us, the first month of that year is almost coming to an end. It has been a busy January. I have been grateful for the milder weather we have been enjoying this winter thus far. Of course, I do realize that today is probably seasonably and appropriately cold.Last weekend, I chanced on making a microwave dessert, which is really unusual for me. I am not much of a baker and microwave, have never tried really using it. I mean for anything other than heating food, I…See More

Crisp and Spicy Potato Skins with Cilantro Aioli

Cooking snacks is a vicious cycle. It goes something like this, I cook something good, we indulge. I love the gratification of both the complements and the seductive satisfaction of snacking, I cook some more and we eat some more and the story continues. This weekend was one of those…See More

Pan Roasted Kohlrabi with Star Anise and Mustard

This year I was rather determined when I did my thanksgiving planning that I would stick to using produce from the farmer's market. It was a little harder this year, since we had a strange season with the storms and freak snowstorms that we have been having. People, often ask me what I bring to the table, it really tends to be…See More

Broiled Scrod with a Yellow Pepper and Caramelized Onion Sauce

Boy do we have a house full of peppers! Actually the shelf downstairs is full of produce, green tomatoes, red tomatoes, bell peppers, hot cayanes and some habaneros. This was our pre-halloween snowstorm clean up. This fall I have not been able to do a good job with either the pictures or the chronicling due to a whole host of…See More

Plum, Ginger and Maple Chutney

I love maple syrup, I can use it anything both sweet and savory. This lightly seasoned chutney is one of my favorite creations. It is lightly spiced with overtones of star anise, cumin and fennel balanced out with a healthy dose of ginger. I personally like to pair this with simple broiled fish, it also probably works well with grilled chicken. I shall let you decide how you want to play and work with this creation. Plum, Ginger and Mapple Chutney Prep Time: 15 minutesCook Time: 20 minutesMakes…See More

So sorry about your father. My own dad died last fall. It's very hard to accept such a huge loss. Will be thinking of you.

Orange Lentil and BeetGreens Soup

I have been away from this space for a while. I have actually been away from a lot of spaces for what feels like a long time. This past summer has been difficult for me. My father has not been well this has meant a lot of distant and distressing journeys to India. When I took the trip to India in August, I knew it would probably…See More

Cracked Wheat and Lentil Risotto

I had sat staring at the picture of this recipe since last week. Last week things just got a little too hectic to post and then there was yesterday, which ideally might have been just the day to do this. The kids dance class got cancelled leaving me with a nice pocket of time. But, somehow I started and edged and hemmed and…See More

Looking forward to see what you came up with. I did a blog a year ago and posted my father's Cantonese recipe for bitter melon. http://www.hookmountaingrowers.com/journal/2009/6/24/bitter-melon-bitter-medicine.html

Love your recipes. Can you do one using Bitter Melon and Sponge Gourd? I did an NPR piece a month ago on Last Chance foods on bitter melon and I'm trying to find recipes outside of the familiar Chinese ones that I know. Thanks!
