Right now the elderberry bushes are flowering. Look for them in marshy, sunny places. There are a lot of plants out there that have white flowers, so make sure you identify the leaves and flowers correctly. Wildman Steve…

It feels so nice to have something so bright green to eat! Especially when it's from my yard. Nothing in my garden is ready yet, but that doesn't mean that green isn't filling up everywhere. I love it when the skeletal trees begin to fill up with a haze of green (in this instance, …

Here it is, cold and rainy out, rhubarb is just leafing out, and I'm talking about strawberries? Right about now is the toughest time for canning, in my opinion. What I’m usually doing now, canning-wise, is tidying up my cupboards for next year’s onslaught and figuring out what was a success and what wasn’t. Another…

One of the easiest preserving techniques is to put something into alcohol. Easy, right? Any kind of fruit plus most kinds of harder alcohols will result in an achievement that you can gloat about when friends come over. Open up a jar of apricot brandy and life instantly gets richer. When really all you did was put…
Howdy! I am writing you because we are in the same area and I am looking for people to ride share to HVFN events. I have fibromyalgia and mild cerebral palsy, so I cannot drive, and this area doesn’t have real para-transit, so I cannot get to most things. I’d be happy to share in the cost of gas. If you are going to an event and you are OK with ridesharing, please send me a message about events you are attending and when you’d be leaving and returning and what you’d want in gas money. It feels weird to contact strangers this way, but I figured if you’re in HVFN you must be “good people” and into community building and green living stuff. Thanks a lot. If this makes you uncomfortable or anything, don’t worry. But if you are into it, just drop me a line. Blessed being! Heather PS I live on Rt 9W in the Village of Saugerties/Barclay Heights next to the Esopus Creek.
Hi there,
I'm from France and was canning and doing preserves as a kid. We recently started a health food store in Ellenville and have food preparation classes on a regular basis. I have had requests for canning amongst others and would like to find ways to bring your (and others) knowledge to our customer base. The store has been growing by leaps and bounds. We're currently planning a giant permaculture garden and fenced in patio for our organic cafe. let me know if you (or someone else) would be interested in giving classes/teaching.
Yours in health, Benoit.
Hi Julia, I garden in the Town of Montgomery Garden (very social) and my husband has his garden at our daughters (solitary). I have only gardened for a few years, but he has been at it forever, so I can & jam. I can tomatoes until I run out of jars and I have hundreds. Way more than we can ever eat, but canning is fun and I hate to waste anything. Lately I have been draining a jar over a strainer and my husband loves this tomato soup. The solids I freeze or use elsewhere.
Yesterday I decanted some lemoncello (vodka infused with lemon peels). I ground the drained peels in the food processor, added approximately an equal amount of sugar, a little orange juice and lemon juice. After cooking it to 220 degrees, there was one small jar of lemon marmalade. It is delicious and was very satisfying.
I am so happy to find this group. Edi McLean
