Annie's New York Kitchen

This blog entry is brief and sad.My cat Fuzzy was killed last week by two untrained local dogs who were wandering the neighborhood.I can't blame the dogs; they were black Labs, a hunting breed, and Fuzzy was their prey. What they did was as natural as Fuz himself hunting field mice and birds.I do blame the owner of the dogs, who probably abused and starved the dogs to make them vicious. At any rate he didn't train them. A big hunting dog is no use to itself or anyone else if it is…See More

Rosh Hashonah, the New Year of the Jewish people, occurs at sundown on the 9th of September, this Thursday.I will probably be eating something completely inappropriate, because I will be on a plane flying from San Francisco to New York, and there is no reason to think that Jet Blue will provide me with a steaming bowl of chicken soup, a plate of chilled gefilte fish, braised brisket with rich mushroom gravy, potato and noodle kugels, and a candied apple for dessert.(On the way out here last…See More

I am delighted by the idea of a "locavore challenge", especially if I can include the dainty delicacies at Russ & Daughters, the world's most important smoked fish store, which is only 92 miles from my home.Even better would be if I could convince myself that the scrumptious melons in our Farmers Markets are a local product. I'm a master convincer, especially when it comes to talking myself into something, but here I am at a loss. Those melons are strictly from Elsewhere, and an expensive…See More

"Tomatoes are cheaper, potatoes are cheaper--now's the time to fall in love!"Eddie Cantor used to sing that. He was a short, slim little man with big rolling eyes and a hypersexualized presence which was, somehow, both childlike and charming; you can catch him in very old movies like Kid Millions and The Kid from Spain, or you can see him on Youtube. Here he is:Of course, tomatoes are not exactly cheap; not if you grow them in your backyard, for example. If you want maximum output and minimal…See More

With any luck, this will soon (and temporarily) be "Annie's Washington, D.C. Kitchen".I put in the part about luck because the boys at Prestige Toyota, where I bought and service my '05 Rav4--a silly name for a great SUV--found a leak in the differential gear. And I'm supposed to take daughter Tracy to Washington, DC tonight for a week-long vacation. This is the first vacation I've taken with Tracy, who is 20 years old and developmentally disabled. She's a terrific kid and it's not a sad story,…See More

I have been surrounded by a coating of sweat ever since May, so you might not want to look at me.How about you? Are you one of those people who thrives on warm weather and can't wait to run around in your underwear yelling about the benefits of direct sunshine and vitamin D? Then can I say something? Can I just say, "SHUT THE #$%^ UP!!!!!!!"?Right. Now the rest of us grumpy, sweaty cooks can talk about something. And that something is, "How to Live Through Very, Very Hot Weather and Continue to…See More

The Markets! The Markets!I am too far away from my Hudson Valley kitchen this summer. Work brings me to Manhattan, and my daughter brings me back to Dutchess and Ulster Counties...for a few Sunday hours, sandwiched in between three-hours rides on the train up to Wassaic. That's why I'm treasuring my times at the farmers' markets. When I can get them.Tarragon. Came up very nicely in my garden this year.At the Saturday Market in Kingston, (9 AM to 1 PM), I have been loving the displays of baked…See More

I used to think that fried green tomatoes were a figment of someone’s Southern imagination, like “Back when I wuz a whippersnapper ever’thang from the farm wuz so delicious, y’all could eat the termaters GREEN!” Also the crayfish cleaned themselves and jumped right into the gumbo of their own free will. Southern cooks have a great reputation for saying this kind of thing but that doesn’t mean we all have to believe it.And yet, I am a dedicated tomato gardener. Determined to beat last year’s…See More

Howdy!  I am writing you because we are in the same area and I am looking for people to ride share to HVFN events.  I have fibromyalgia and mild cerebral palsy, so I cannot drive, and this area doesn’t have real para-transit, so I cannot get to most things.  I’d be happy to share in the cost of gas.  If you are going to an event and you are OK with ridesharing, please send me a message about events you are attending and when you’d be leaving and returning and what you’d want in gas money.  It feels weird to contact strangers this way, but I figured if you’re in HVFN you must be “good people” and into community building and green living stuff.  Thanks a lot.  If this makes you uncomfortable or anything, don’t worry.  But if you are into it, just drop me a line.  Blessed being!  Heather PS I live on Rt 9W in the Village of Saugerties/Barclay Heights next to the Esopus Creek.
