My boyfriend and I just bought our first house, and I just planted my first garden. And now, I have another new first: a varmint! I think it's a woodchuck, I've seen him in the neighbor's yard, and someone's been boring holes under the chain link fence (right through my pole beans sprouts!). Someone suggested a vole also. Anyhow, he's eaten a kale plant and broccoli seedling but so far left tomatoes, squash, eggplant and basil untouched.

What do I do? I can fill in his entry hole, but he'll just make another one.

My most holistic thought: Maybe I should plant him a garden outside the fence so he doesn't want to come in?  Help!

I'm soooo sorry you have a woodchuck. I had one last year that ruined my garden. I tried to trap him in a have a heart trap but ended up with a skunk instead. (another story) I did deter him by putting VERY AWFUL smelling garlic spikes down every tunnel... and then covering all openings with a big slab of bluestone. In the end a neighbor relocated it. I think that is the only solution. You can call the DEC to get names of licensed wildlife removers.
When I had woodchuck in a resonable size garden I buried fence all along the outside perimeter to about 10 inches to stop digging and I put chicken wire angled out from the fence at the top to prevent climbing. Believe me if a woodchuck wants your garden goodies they are very persistent. Of course you could get a dog that has a good prey chasing instinct. Good luck
