Hello all. So if you're really looking to geek out and try aging your beer in a whiskey or bourbon barrel, it turns out they are available form Tuthilltown Spirits in Gardiner. I got more info about bourbon than I ever thought I would when I went there last week for a tasting, but it turns out they can use the barrels only once and then have to dispose of them somehow. Some arcane law probably originally enacted at the behest of the coopers' union....Anyway, their whiskey barrels conveniently come in 3-, 7-, or 14-gallon sizes (if I remember correctly--I had had a few "tastes" by then). They're a little pricey, so I bought some used barrel slats that they sell as something you can throw on your BBQ fire to get a nice bourbon oak smoke going, (also a great idea) but I'm just going to sanitize those and throw them in my secondary and hope for the same effect.
Oh by the way, the whiskey is amazing.
I'll be using my boubon barrel pieces in a dry stout I'll be brewing this weekend. Yay!
