in the yard of my new home is an old pear tree.  last year it grew lots of weird, lumpy, rotting, bug infested pears and this year it is filled with strong baby pears. i don't like pears generally, and i don't think this tree makes the type you eat off the tree.  or something has gone wrong, i cannot find any online info on how to care fo a pear tree.

i'd like to do something with the pears, though.  any ideas?  also any advice on knowing when they are ripe and how to handle the rotting and bug infested issues?

thanks!

Heather, Cornell cooperative extension is a fantastic source of information on the net.  Google them and add pears to your search, then skip to page 37 on their fruit trees booklet. Using pears from an old tree...jam did not impress me, canned pears in a simple syrup are a lot of work but delicious, and this year I'm going to try pear brandy.
Thanks, Edi!  Even the deer don't eat them.
