I am so grateful to have been part of the foraging walk led by George and Roger on the far corners of CIA's campus last weekend. I've been making foraged green salads all week long, relying heavily on sorrel (which, to my delight, is growing everywhere), grape leaves and tendrils, lamb's quarters, some plantains, and a little garlic mustard. I've started supplementing this with the first baby lettuce crop from my veggie garden, as well as some edible flowers from the yard.

Do you have a photo of what local sorrel looks like growing? I've done Google searches but there seem to be many varieties, so I'm not sure what to look for. Had hoped to go on the foraging walk but got derailed by a family emergency.
Thanks,
Masha
Masha - Here's a picture of Wood Sorrel. It's literally everywhere: yards, sidewalks, etc. It tastes lemony http://etmarciniec.com/images/sorrel.jpg
Thanks! I've seen that but never knew what it was.
Hi Meghan,
Your pic shows wood sorrel, (Oxalis spp). What George found along Rte. 9 was sheep sorrel, (Rumex acetosella). Although they're not related, they both are quite lemony, due to oxalic acid content. Wood sorrel is the typical Irish shamrock. It's found everywhere. Both are delicious in salads, and sheep sorrel is the main ingredient in schav, an Eastern European sorrel soup.
Sorrel comes from an Old French (I think) word for sour. Makes sense, no?
Great website. You do an amazing job! Keep it up.

Roger
Thanks so much, Roger! I have been spicing up my salads with wood sorrel, using the picture that Meghan supplied for identification - it's plentiful where I live (border of Catskill/Saugerties). I'll have to go looking for sheep sorrel as well. Not sure if I have it here or not - and now it's dark, so I'll have to wait till tomorrow!

Hi Lauren,
Just found your post.
Thanks for including me as one of the leaders, but this was George's walk. I just try to help where I can. It's important to me to get people involved in this green magic. George is a unique forager. His knowledge and enthusiasm are boundless, and, like me, loves foraging and sharing what he knows. Get to know him as a mushroom expert, and see another facet of his prodigious talent.
Thanks for the notice.

Roger
