I have a thinning problem! I just hate wasting all those little sprouts that shoot up. I value every one... but I know that they crowd each other out from growing to their potential.

So, I'm growing lettuces in container gardens, and I was wondering if someone could advise me on how much to thin them. The goal is to have a thick bed of lettuce for a nice display. I will eat them after they serve as pretty centerpieces, but that is the first purpose.

Thoughts?

Hey Meghan! I know it can be tough to thin, but just remember that many plants you can actually just pot up or replant elsewhere. As for the lettuce, it depends- do you want them to turn into heads of lettuce, or are you going for a carpet of baby lettuce for mesclun? If it's head lettuce you want, you'll have to thin them to at least 8 inches or so away from each other on all sides. If you want the carpet, you can actually have them very close and you might not have to thin them at all, I'd say about half an inch to an inch on all sides is plenty. I've even grown them closer than that and it's been fine. Good luck with it!
