I thought fellow members of HVFN would appreciate this alert, and maybe give your Senator a call....or better yet, let me know what's up with this bill. Would it really improve the FDA? Would it help get people to eat more good, fresh food, or will it further marginalize small producers that can't meet new regs designed for massive, dirty food production systems?

I realize this is not as simple as it seems. Here ya go:

Today a key Senate committee will hear just how unsafe our food supply is.

We need your help to make sure they do more than just listen. We need them to act to prevent any more deadly outbreaks from contaminated food.

Food safety has fallen from the headlines since last winter’s deadly outbreak of contaminated peanut products that killed at least nine people. But the problem hasn’t gone away. Nearly every month another food outbreak is reported, often too late to help those already sickened.

Email your Senator on this committee and ask them to pass a food safety bill ASAP!

A new report finds that the riskiest foods regulated by the Food and Drug Administration are ones that we serve our families every day – lettuce, eggs, tomatoes and certain kinds of cheese. Since 1990, the Center for Science in the Public Interest found that these and other foods caused almost 50,000 illnesses.

The House has passed a bill that would dramatically improve the FDA’s food safety program – including the power to recall tainted food, annual inspections of high-risk food processing plants, and ensuring companies have prevention plans in place. Producers also would have to test food for contamination and report findings to the FDA.

But the Senate has yet to act on its bill. Tomorrow’s hearing is a good first step, but we need the committee to pass a bill ASAP so it can be voted on by the full Senate in time for the holiday season!

Your Senator is on this committee – tell them to move a strong food safety bill NOW!

You have enough to worry about this time of year without fretting that your delicious Thanksgiving meal will get you or your family sick. Let’s get reform passed before another holiday season goes by.

And if you have friends and family in your state who can lend their voice, please forward this email to them so they can join our effort.

Sincerely,
Jean Halloran
