I just discovered that Sprout Creek Farm in Poughkeepsie offers cheesemaking workshops on Saturdays for individuals or groups.

The workshop includes a farm tour, a comprehensive lesson on the art and science of cheesemaking with Colin McGrath, and a tasting of at least a dozen cheeses.

Workshop hours are generally from 9AM to 1PM depending on the cheeses being made that day.

I don't have information on what this costs, but I wanted to see if there was interest to have an HVFN group outing. We could be flexible about the Saturday to accommodate the most people.

I'm interested but most of my Sat. mornings are booked until mid-november. Gotta get that kid to his soccer games.
I'm interested. Oct. 9 is the only problem weekend.
I'm interested in this as well. I've always wanted to take cheesemaking workshop. I agree that Saturdays are not great until late fall.
I'd be very interested -please keep us posted on cost and date details- thanks
I would definitely love to do this!

Mark and I would definitely be interested - we love their cheese too!
I would be ABSOLUTELY interested in this! Most Saturdays are good for me, except for the 9th and 23rd of Oct.
Sounds super cool. Would love it!
I might also be interested, depending on the Saturday, of course. Great idea!
I was thinking about starting to make my own cheese. This sounds great. 16th of October work for anyone?

Hi everyone! What a response! I will talk to the farm and then set up a Doodle (a cool event scheduling site) so that we can find the saturday that works for the greatest number of people. I'll keep you posted!
So I talked to Colin today and there are some hitches to the workshop.

The normal Saturday course is booked through March! It is actually about 4 hours of intensive cheese lecture plus the tour. The cost is $100 per person. And he prefers to do groups of 4 to 6 people. Though the Saturdays are booked, weekday sessions can be arranged, but still only for a group of 6 or fewer.

Colin also said he's willing to arrange something different for a group of about 10, at a lesser price. Maybe a tour, tasting and an hour of cheese talk. This would be more for the cheese voyeur, whereas the intensive course is for those who are serious enthusiasts or want to make cheese at home.

So, what do folks think?

Please vote for:

1) Organizing a weekday intensive course
2) The shorter course (weekday or weekend?)
