DESCRIPTION:This class takes the do-it-yourself gardener on a step-by-
 step journey through the basics of developing a successful garden desi
 gn. Learn the importance of site assessment as well as the basic eleme
 nts of design. Through observation and site assessment participants wi
 ll get the tools they need to create a well planned, all-season garden
 .\n\nSpeaker Barbara Darbin is a master gardener and former art teache
 r for Kingston city schools and a certified landscape and garden desig
 ner. She received her training from the Institute of Ecosystem Studies
  in Millbrook.\n\nCornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County's Mas
 ter Gardener Program will again offer a series of workshops during Feb
 ruary and March to help the home gardener get prepared for spring.\n\n
 Classes will be held Feb. 11, Feb. 25, March 10 and March 25.\n\nAll c
 lasses will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ulster County Board of Cooperative 
 Educational Services, 175 Route 32 in New Paltz.\n\nParticipants may c
 hoose the class or classes they are most interested in or sign up for 
 the entire series. The fee for individual classes is $15, or $50 for a
 ll four. Class sizes are limited. Advance registration is required fiv

 Compliments on Your Complementary Garden\n\nSpeaker Kris Perry has bee
 n a master gardener for two years and still considers herself an appre
 ntice. Using companion gardening guidelines, she planted her first veg
 etable garden this year as part of the food pantry at her church.\n\nC
 omplementary or companion planting can be described as a practical app
 roach that matches two or more plants that, when grown together, resul
 t in some cultural benefit such as pest control or nutrient uptake. Le
 cture will guide participants through basic design elements of color, 
 shape and texture, and plant selection with an emphasis on color, frag
